Is your blog mobile-friendly?   If it isn’t you could be missing out on MILLIONS of potential readers and customers!

Is Your Blog Mobile-Friendly-NewbieZine - If your blog isn't mobile-friendly - you're missing out on millions of potential readers!

Here are some stats to boggle your mind:

  • 48% of mobile users start a search on mobile (Smart Insights
  • Google says 61% of users are unlikely to return to a mobile site they had trouble accessing and 40% visit a competitor’s site instead. (McKinsey & Company)
  • Pinterest is the most mobile social network and 64% of its referred traffic comes from either smartphones or tablet devices. (Mobile Marketing Watch)
  • By 2019, mobile advertising will represent 72% of all US digital ad spending. (Marketing Land)
  • Mobile Offers are Redeemed 10x More Frequently Than Print Offers (eMarketer)

So, what’s the takeaway from all of that?  Your blog had better be mobile friendly if you want to carve out your piece of the blogging pie!  Don’t start panicking!  This is a pretty easy task to achieve!

Find Out if Your Blog is Mobile-Friendly

Google provides a free tool to help you determine if your blog is mobile-friendly.  It’s called the “Mobile-Friendly Test“.

Once you have the site up, simply type in your blog’s web address.  Be sure to use HTTP (unsecured) or HTTPS (secured).  That is important to the test.  Google gives better marks to a secured site over a non-secured site.

Click the Run Test button and wait for your results.  This process can take a few seconds to a few minutes.  Don’t close the browser window!

The Results – IS Your Blog Mobile-Friendly?

You will see one of two results.  Either your site IS mobile-friendly or it is not. Let’s assume your blog didn’t get a very good grade for mobile-friendliness.

First – make sure you are using a mobile-friendly WordPress theme.  Look at the description of the theme.  Does it SAY the theme is responsive?

Second – preview your theme in the mobile format.  Go to Appearance > Customize.  In the lower left-hand corner, you should see three icons: computer, tablet, and mobile.  Click the mobile icon.  What does your site look like?  Is it easy to read?  Easy to scroll?  Are images cut off? If your blog isn’t looking quite right – your theme could be the problem!  (Not all themes are created equal!)

Third – read what Google tells you about your site.  Google is pretty decent about giving you tips on making good updates.  If you aren’t sure about the suggestions – shoot me an email — I’m happy to help you make sense of it!
